    GHANA TRIP
    2006

THE NEURO-SPINE RESEARCH AND Human Development Organization, the charitable arm of Mid-Atlantic Neurosurgical Associates is pleased to announce that the fourth trip to Ghana, West Africa was a success.

    Why Ghana
Ghana is a country of approximately 20 million people and has two trained neurosurgeons and two assistants. The neighboring countries are either in a similar or worse situation, therefore making the plight of patients requiring such care mind boggling. The entire country has no MRI scan machine and three outdated CT scan machines, which are frequently down due to excessive use.

    The Ghana Mission
This mission to Ghana by THE NEURO-SPINE RESEARCH AND Human Development Organization, as well as a general surgery team is a reflection of the spirit of the organization. Individuals participating all supported their own expenses in addition to volunteering their time. The volunteers included physicians and other staff working with the physicians and staff in Ghana to provide care that is not readily available in the region, providing these services regardless of the patient's inability to otherwise afford this type of treatment and to train individuals in the region who can further advance the care to the local population. Accompanied by a general surgery team, we were able to provide services also to the rural mission hospitals, which proved to be invaluable. Future visits to Ghana as well as other countries are planned with the hope of an ongoing program focusing on intracranial and spinal disorders, as well as other disciplines.
